KYIV, Mar. 20 – Parliament Speaker Ivan Pliusch’s press secretary Viktor Ukolov tendered his resignation on Monday, the Interfax news agency reported.
Ukolov told Interfax that his decision was prompted by his worsening health and "psychological discomfort" in connection with journalist Georgy Gongadze's disappearance.

At the same time, Ukolov said he did not want his decision to be considered as a "political statement."

Ukolov added that he gave a high appraisal to what he called a well-balanced and reasonable position on the part of Pliushch, who, Ukolov said, did his best to ensure that the investigation into Gongadze’s disappearance proceeded under public control "without unreasonable emotions."

"I support the speaker's position, but I wish to restrain from work within the power structures until the impartial investigation of the Gongadze case is completed," Ukolov said.

Political forces opposing Ukraine’s current government have been fighting a political battle with authorities since Gongadze’s mysterious disappearance last September, accusing officials of covering up what opposition members have called the journalist’s politically motivated murder.
