On the 31 October 2004 people in Ukraine - a European nation of 48 million - went to the polling stations to elect new President.

This is the 4th time Presidential elections are being held in Ukraine since it gained independence in 1991. By all counts it is the most crucial elections in the recent Ukrainian history which will have an impact not only internally but also on the regional and European scale. Depending on the outcome the deterioration of democratic standards taking place in Ukraine now can either intensify or get reversed.
