A novel that confused the online bookseller Amazon into classifying it under science and engineering was yesterday hailed a "masterpiece of tragicomic writing".
Marina Lewycka's A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian won the $20,000 Saga award for books of wit and humour by authors over 50. Her story is about the havoc created in a family of Ukrainian exiles in Peterborough when the father marries a gold-digging woman from his homeland.
The judges - who maintain that over-50s have a flair for hilarity and ratlike cunning - said the novel had fun, warmth and passion.
