N. Vitrenko (leader of the PSPU) has decided that instead of giving people the promised source of miraculous energy promised in her election campaign, the immediate commencement of Viktor Yushchenko's impeachment should be demanded from the Verkhovna Rada (parliament).
In her opinion, Yushchenko was elected by means of serious violations of the law and of European democratic standards, and thus he does not have a moral right to be president. To speed things up, her party is using its favourite method: collecting signatures. It is not clear whether the signatures collected by Vitrenko’s party “against Yushchenko,” “for Yanukovych” “for the referendum,” and “for Orthodox Christianity and the Union” will also be taken into account.
The Progressive Socialist Party is asking other parties to join them efforts in this effort.
Maidan reminder: Impeachment is removal of the president from office in the event that he has committed a serious crime, such as treason. For this, the majority in Verkhovna Rada initiates the procedure, a special temporary commission is created for the investigation, its conclusions and proposals are considered by Verkhovna Rada, and then the constitutional majority agrees or disagrees with the charges. After that, the respective decision should be made by the constitutional and Supreme Courts, and only after their verdict can Verkhovna Rada approve the president’s removal from office by a three-quarters majority vote of all parliamentarians.
