The Beginning of the Dekuchmization of Ukraine

KYIV - The Pora civic organization has declared the beginning of the "dekuchmization of Ukraine" [a reference former president Leonid Kuchma], which means cleansing the country of the consequences of the old regime, "getting rid of kuchmists in government institutions and preventing them from insinuating themselves there, enhancing Ukrainian legislation, and fundamentally changing government management and relations between the government and its people," organization activists Mykhaylo Svystovych and Volodymyr Vyatovych said today at a press conference at UNIAN. [Pora took the lead in most protests against the falsification of last year's presidential election.]

They said that the first task that Pora is planning to undertake in order to "cleanse the country" is to create a list of those involved in falsifications, to register the violations that occurred during the election, and to subsequently forward these to law-enforcement agencies.

The organization's activists are also planning to draw up lists of people who lost their jobs and were expelled from educational institutions for their political beliefs, in order to restore them to their posts and studies.

Pora members will stay out of politics but plan to monitor the fulfilment of the newly-elected president's election programme. They will also demand that the murderers of journalists Georhiy Gongadze and Ihor Oleksandrov and other high-profile cases be investigated, and that officials of any rank who were responsible for these illegal acts be brought to account.

Pora members are confident that all state officials must be dismissed from their posts and appointment to those posts should be made on a competitive basis.

Volodymyr Vyatovych said that Pora "will continue to remain the Cerberus of democracy, and will bark at every violation and injustice" made by authorities.
