International Drawing Competition for Ukrainian Children

Competition guidelines:

The competition is being held under the initiative of Petrikovka’s regional Peter Kalnishevsky Culture Fund and will be conducted in three rounds between February 10, 2005 and August 1, 2005.
1. First rounds: Correspondence (February 10–April 10, 2005)
2. Second rounds: Location - Dnipropetrovsk, Ukraine (May 10, 2005 – June 10, 2005)
3. Third rounds: Location - Toronto, Canada

The goal and basic tasks of the competition:

The expression and development of the creative abilities of children and teenagers, cultivation of a sense of friendship, and the strengthening creative ties between Ukraine's younger generation and the children of Ukrainian immigrants and the Ukrainian Diaspora in the various countries of the world.

Basic directions and requirements for submissions:

For participation in the correspondence round, artists are to submit creative works painted on paper or cardboard. Format - A2 (60.41 centimeters). A size discrepancy of no more than 1.5 cm on each side is permitted. Works should not be framed.

Identification of the work and the artist are to be legibly handwritten on the reverse side in Ukrainian, Russian or English.

(Attention! The following items marked “*” are obligatory and must be included with each submission.)
- * Surname, name and patronymic of the author
- An explanation of the work, preferably in verse
- * Native languages. Please list the child’s languages and level of fluency
- * Place and date of birth
- * Place of residence and home address
- Phone number (including country code, city code, village code as needed)
- * E-mail address
- * Educational institution
- Data about the child’s teacher/instructor

Competition participants and conditions:

Children 10-15 years of age (inclusive) are invited to participate in this competition (Please note: Young men and girls who will be 16 years old by June 10, 2005 are not eligible for participation) Competition winners will be recognised in three age categories (based on the information as of February 10, 2005):
1) Ages 10-11
2) Ages 12-13
3) Ages 14-15

Based on the results of the correspondence round, the jury will select the three best participants per age group, who will then proceed to the second round in which they will compete for consideration in the final round. Invitations to participate in the second and third rounds and the actualisation program will be sent to the winners or transferred to educational institutions on an individual basis.

The second round will be carried out personally, for children living in Ukraine only. The best works (from all submissions) will be displayed in Dnipropetrovsk's House of Scholars, and later in Canada.

As a direct result of the first correspondence round, the jury will name nine winners among children living outside Ukraine who will directly pass into the third, final round. Thus, one winner from Ukraine (three children) in each age category is invited and two authors of the best works in each age category among children of the Ukrainian immigrants (six children) will participate in the third, final round. In total, nine artists will take part in the third round. They will compete for first, second and third prize in each (respective) age category.

Petrikovka Regional Peter Kalnishevsky Culture Fund assumes the cost and responsibility for finalists (children) traveling to Canada for the final round, including travel, visa support, accommodation, and responsibility life and health of the child, for the duration of the third round.

Please note: the Petrikovka Regional Peter Kalnishevsky Culture Fund will provide visa support to persons over the age of 21 who wish to accompany the winners, but travel and related expenses will not be covered. Likewise, the Petrikovka Regional Peter Kalnishevsky Culture Fund will grant specific organizational assistance to any exhibition participant and chaperone who by June 10, 2005 state their willingness to travel to Canada at their expense as part of the fan/supporters corps.

Petrikovka Regional Peter Kalnishevsky Culture Fund also informs a collection of children’s poetry, “We Are from Ukraine,” is being prepared for distribution during the competition’s second and third rounds. Submission of poetry is permitted for children to 18 years of age. Children’s poems, in Ukrainian or other languages, and data about the authors should be sent by March 30, 2005 to: we_are_from_ukr@mail.ru .
