Was Kuchma Involved In Journalist's Death?
Former KGB Agent Says His Tapes Implicate Kuchma
(CBS) Up Next: April 29, 7 p.m. ET/PT
Fugitive former security officer Major Mykola Melnychenko, who claims his secretly recorded tapes implicate Ukrainian President Leonid Kuchma in the death of journalist Georgi Gongadze, speaks to Steve Kroft in his first television interview. Kuchma also denies the accusations.
Melenychenko, a former KGB agent, is now in the United States under political asylum. He has been hiding from Ukrainian authorities since November and was interviewed at an undisclosed site in Central Europe last month. He claims the digital tapes contain the voice of Kuchma and incriminate him in corruption and the kidnapping and death of Gongadze, who was critical of his administration. Gongadze disappeared last September and a decapitated body believed to be his was found near the Ukrainian capital of Kiev.
Kuchma claims the voice on Melenychenko's tapes may be his, but is cleverly edited from speeches and conversations to incriminate him. The tape has been broadcast throughout Europe and used to discredit him by his political opponents.
