DES MOINES, Iowa (Dow Jones)--It looks like Warren Buffett's done it again - made yet another savvy acquisition at a bargain price.
This time it's Enron Corp.'s (ENRNQ) former natural-gas pipeline.
Last January Enron sold the 16,500-mile pipeline, operated by its Northern Natural Gas unit, to Dynegy Inc. (DYN). The total purchase price, including previously advanced cash plus assumption of debt and option exercise price, was $2.473 billion.
Monday, Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc. (BRKA BRKB) agreed to buy the energy-transporting pipe for $1.878 billion - a 24% discount to what Dynegy had forked over.
It was the second time in only a few months that investor Buffett has tapped into the pipeline business, to help bail out distressed energy firms and to get valuable assets at a handsome discount.
Earlier this year Berkshire bought Williams Cos.' (WMB) Kern River pipeline. A utilities unit of Buffett's insurance-based holding company paid $450 million plus assumption of $510 million in debt. Williams took a loss on the deal.
In the deal with Dynegy, Buffett agreed to pay $928 million cash plus assume the $950 million in debt that flowed to Dynegy from Enron in their transaction.
Considered the world's second-wealthiest man, Buffett has a reputation for buying undervalued assets, then exploiting their intrinsic value for handsome gains. Today Berkshire's holdings range from executive jets to chocolate candy to cowboy boots to a newspaper in Buffalo, N.Y.
While he's a relative newcomer to the energy business, as a resident of Omaha, Neb., Buffett probably knows more about Northern Natural than most. Years ago, before it became part of Enron, Northern Natural Gas was based in Omaha.
Shares of Berkshire Class A closed Monday at $68,305 per share, up $4,655, or $7.3%, on the New York Stock Exchange. The holding company's Class B shares closed at $2,292 each, up $180, or 8.5%.
