TEHRAN, Iran - A military plane carrying 302 members of Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards crashed in the mountains of southeastern Iran on Wednesday, killing all on board in the country's worst plane crash ever, state-run media reported.

The plane was en route from Zahedan, on the Pakistan border, to Kerman, about 500 miles southeast of Tehran, state-run Tehran television reported. It crashed about 20 miles from its destination.

The Russian-made Antonov airliner operated by the Iranian military lost contact with the control tower at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, according to the reports.

Bad Weather Hampers Search Teams At Iran Plane Crash Site

TEHRAN (AP)--Search teams pressed through fog, rain and strong wind Thursday to recover some mutilated bodies from the mountainous site of a military plane crash which killed all 302 Iranian soldiers aboard, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported.

In the country's worst plane crash, the Russian-made Ilyushin operated by Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards crashed Wednesday evening en route from Zahedan, on the Pakistan border, to Kerman, about 800 kilometers southeast of Tehran.

All aboard - 18 crew and 284 passengers - were members of the Revolutionary Guards, an elite group under the direct control of supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The guards protect Iran's borders and defend ruling hard-liners in this ultraconservative society.

Bad weather was hampering efforts by rescuers to retrieve the remains found, grounding helicopters and slowing down mountaineers, IRNA said. Rescuers at the crash site, the agency said earlier, had confirmed there were no survivors.

The aircraft lost contact with the control tower about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, before preparing to land at the Kerman airport. It crashed 30 kilometers from its destination.

Air traffic controllers at Kerman said the pilot had radioed about bad weather and strong winds before losing contact, Tehran television reported. There was heavy snowfall in many parts of Iran Tuesday and Wednesday, including Zahedan, which hadn't seen snow in three years.

Search teams early Thursday found part of the debris, including the plane's wing, near a tunnel which cuts through local mountains, the news agency reported.

The possibility of terrorism wasn't raised by any of the media reporting the crash.

A senior official in Zahedan told The Associated Press that several of the victims were senior officers of the guard.

The crash was the latest in a string of plane accidents the Iranian government has blamed on U.S. sanctions, arguing they have prevented the country from repairing and replacing its aging fleet. Trade between Iran and the U.S. has been frozen under sanctions Washington imposed after the 1979 takeover of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran.

Since the Islamic revolution that year, Iran has supplemented its fleet of Boeing and European-made Airbus airliners with planes bought or leased from the former Soviet Union. Iran isn't allowed to buy European-made Airbuses because about 40% of their parts are U.S. made.

One official told The Associated Press the forces were in Zahedan to prepare for the visit of Khamenei, who was scheduled to tour the city on Friday. It wasn't clear whether that visit would still take place.

The government declared three days of mourning beginning Friday. Thursday is an Islamic holiday in Iran, the feast of Velayat, when Shiite Muslims believe Islam's prophet Mohammad appointed his son-in-law, Ali, as his successor.

Wednesday's crash was the deadliest in Iranian history with the toll surpassing the 290 killed on July 3, 1988, when an Iran Air A300 Airbus was shot down over the Persian Gulf by the USS Vincennes. The U.S. military said it misidentified the plane as an Iranian fighter, an account disputed by Iran.

TEHRAN, Feb 19 (Reuters) - An Iranian military plane crashed in mountainous terrain in southeastern Iran on Wednesday, killing all 302 Revolutionary Guards and crew on board in the country's worst ever air disaster, state media reported.

There was no immediate explanation for what appeared to be one of the highest death tolls in world aviation history. Officials said poor weather, including strong winds, may have been a factor.

Iran's official news agency IRNA said the plane, which was operated by Iran's elite Revolutionary Guards military organisation, crashed at 6:24 p.m. local time (1454 GMT) 35 km (22 miles) southeast of the city of Kerman.

The victims included 18 aircrew. The rest were members of the Sarallah brigade from the Revolutionary Guards, which is independent of Iran's regular army and answers directly to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Revolutionary Guards, with about 120,000 personnel, were formed shortly after the creation of the Islamic Republic in 1979 and played a key role in the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war.

The death toll exceeded that of a 1988 disaster, when an Iran Air A-300 Airbus was shot down over the Gulf by the U.S. warship Vincennes which wrongly identified it as an attacking fighter. All 290 people on board were killed in that incident.

A senior source close to the government told Reuters some high-ranking military officials were among the fatalities in Wednesday's crash.

Officials refused to comment on why so many military personnel were travelling together.

State media said the Russian-built Ilyushin aircraft had taken off from Zahedan, near Iran's border with Pakistan.

          LAST COMMUNICATION

About one hour into the flight the pilot told air traffic controllers that he wanted to land in Kerman, which lies 1,075 km (670 miles) southeast of Tehran and is normally 45 minutes flying time from Zahedan.

"In his last radio contact, the pilot said 'I am trying to approach the airport; maybe the weather conditions will get better'. At that moment, the contact was lost," Kerman state governor Mohammad Ali Karimi, told IRNA.

Part of one of the plane's wings was located in the early hours of Thursday morning and rescuers were combing the crash site area.

The head of Kerman's Red Crescent Society said 60 relief workers of his office had set out for the snow-covered slopes in search of the bodies.

There were no reports of any casualties on the ground.

The Iranian government issued a message of condolence to the families of those killed in the crash, which was the latest in a series of aviation disasters in Iran, most of which involved Russian-designed aircraft.

Since the 1979 Islamic revolution, Iran has been forced to supplement its fleet of Boeing and European-made Airbus airliners with planes bought or leased from the former Soviet Union.

Last December, a Ukranian Antonov An-140 plane crashed into a mountain in central Iran, killing all 46 aboard. Most of the passengers were top Ukranian and Russian aerospace officials who were travelling to Iran to test fly an Iranian-built copy of the plane. The crash was blamed on pilot error.

Earlier last year, all 119 people aboard an Iran Air Tours died when a Tupolev-154 aircraft crashed near the western city of Khorramabad.
