Among the reasons for Ukraine joining the WTO are:
Ø International experience shows that rapid and sustained growth of domestic wealth has occurred only in those countries that had strong, sustained growth of exports. This is true of the east Asian tigers of Singapore, Hong Kong, South Korea and Taiwan; more developed economies such as Ireland; and countries from more diverse regions such as Chile, Mauritius and China. WTO membership helps. For example, in the 20 years before it joined WTO, China’s exports grew at an annual rate of 15 percent; since joining, annual export growth doubled, to 30 percent.
Ø The WTO has 148 member countries that collectively account for 97 percent of global trade. Membership of the organization is vital if Ukraine is to be a significant player in the global economy. It also provides Ukraine with a voice in setting global trade rules.
Ø World-wide experience shows that opening the economy to trade and foreign direct investment increases income and diversifies exports without increasing unemployment.
Ø Membership of WTO will allow diversification of Ukrainian exports. It will also provide additional rights for Ukrainian exporters through WTO’s dispute settlement procedures.
Ø As a WTO member, Ukraine will be permitted to continue with preferential trading arrangements with historically close trading partners, such as Russia.
Ø WTO accession will provide Ukraine with enhanced trade negotiating rights with other prospective WTO members. Other countries will have to obtain Ukraine’s consent for new multilateral agreements to come into force.
