Alaska's Palin to push legislation for in-state gas pipeline

Alaska Governor Sarah Palin will introduce legislation to encourage
development of an in-state natural gas pipeline that could deliver gas from
the North Slope to communities in the state's interior and south-central
region within five years, she told legislators.

"We're facilitating a smaller, in-state gasline with legislation we'll
hand you next month," Palin said in her annual state-of-the-state address. "It
will carry 460,000 Mcf/d of gas to energize Alaska."

Palin provided no details on the proposal, but said in earlier briefings
the project would be her top legislative priority.

She also stopped short of endorsing two competing proposals for an
in-state pipeline. One is by Enstar Natural Gas Co., the gas utility serving
south-central Alaska, to build a 20-inch or 24-inch pipeline from Anchorage to
the North Slope, or another plan by the Alaska Natural Gas Development
Authority, a state agency, to build a 20-inch pipeline to the state's interior
that would connect with a large diameter pipeline from the North Slope to the
lower 48 states.
