Dear History Channel:

I respect your mission to educate Americans and the world about important events in the world history. I have watched some of movies/documentaries about the World War I, World War II, and the Civil War, as well as history of technological and science developments.

One topic is constantly missing from your schedule - Man-made Famine 1932/1933 in Ukraine. The Famine, acknowledged to have been a Genocide only lately/in the 1990ies, claimed 7 000 000/seven million Ukrainian lives in the center of geographical Europe.

I ask you to show the documentary of Slavko Novytsky in your program. Description of the documentary is available from:

Many people died. Seven million people/Ukrainians died. Many children were starved to death (see black-and-white insert #5 of reference 1, a book). Corps were lying all over the streets (see black-and-white insert #6 of reference 1, the book). Many children had to find food for themselves after parents were murdered/suffered the slow death from hunger. Many of these/homeless/parentless were small kids; five-year olds had to beg, steal/collect grain in fields; some were slaughtered by criminals for food, some were starved/murdered in group/fosternhomes without food (black-and-white insert #7, reference 1, the book). The famine/Genocide/Famine was denied in Ukraine and abroad. Journalist Walter Duranty wrote a few articles in New York Times denying the Famine 1933/Genocide 1933/ Holocost 1933. The Congress started investigation about Genicide 1933/ Holocost 1933 in the 1980s. Witnesses were questioned and other evidence was collected. The survivors/witnesses testified whole villages dieing out, and cases of cannibalism after a rich harvest. The harvest was locked (see black-and-white insert #3 in reference 1, book) and taken away by train. The congress of the United States voted the Famine33/ Holodomor/ Holocost33 to be a Genocide against Ukrainian people. The vote was cast in the 108th Congress, 1st session H.Res.356 on September 5, 2003. The House of Representatives accepted the Resolution to call Holodomor/Holocost33 to be a Genocide (reference 2) [add citation]. [Original]: The congress [of the United States recognized the Famine33/ Holodomor/ Holocost33 in the 108th Congress, 1st session H.Res.356 on September 5, 2003. This is what I learned in my history lesson in high school and while doing research on my own in Indiana University. * * * * * * While I was doing research in Indiana University Main Library, now Wells Library, I had strange things happening. Contents of IU web-pages changed in minutes, f-word appearing on library web-page. I could not understand why this and other strange things, like disappearing email, was happening to me. Many people/librarians were ridiculing me. The only thing I can think [of] is Hate Crime. Why? My problems started [to pile up/heap] when I arrived to the campus. And history/Kaganovich connection is the only thing about me that makes me different from other IU students. Professor [Michael] Kaganovich was putting me down /depressing in class in front of other unsuspecting students. Prof. Kaganovich was telling/ [saying] the word “problem” eight (8) to thirteen (13) times each lecture. I did not pay attention to that first. I was trusting him. He looked friendly and [was] smiling often. I did not pay attention to his last name. [First,] I did not remember it was the same as in [my] history book first. Prof. Kaganovich was also beating on his thigh bone with his left hand often during lecture, two or three times at least. I did not pay attention to that first. In the middle of semester, Fall 2002, I had one sexual harassment by an undergraduate student that I hoped nobody knew, because I felt guilty and embarrassed. Prof. Kaganovich made a friend with Prof. Glomm /my advisor. Prof. Glomm was giggling and ridiculing me abusively before the class/ [my classmates], [at] 11:15 am. Next after Prof. Kaganovich’s class [at] 9:30 am in the morning. As Prof. Kaganovich continued “problem’ saying in each lecture, I started thinking of all my problems. Am I okay? I thought of my health. I thought of murdered journalist Gongadze, and I thought of Holodomor/ Holocost 1933. The picture of [the journalist beheaded on government’s order/request]. Where was it/the head? That was so similar to the beheaded American journalists. [Original]: The picture of Ukrainian journalist’s head separated by murderers ordered from government. That was so similar to U.S.A.’s beheaded journalists. The picture from a famous Ukrainian novel by Mykola Khvyliovyi that every child/adolescent reads in school. In that novel/picture, the author describes how mother has to make a difficult choice of cooking a dead already infant for other children to survive. Prof. Kaganovich is from Ukraine, students told, so he should know. I still did not connect his last name to the name in the history book. I and other students (Cody) started counting “problem” words in/during lecture. Eight was the smallest number occurring in one lecture. I discussed that “problem” word with my friend Jonathan. Then Prof. Kaganovich did something that threw me out of forgetting and being friendly. Prof. Kaganovich started saying “boil down” in [his/mathematics] lecture. I was terrified [felt dreadful]. My hair went up from fear, probably. I made the connection with the/my history book at this time. I was [felt] terrified. I came that [shaken/stunned/warmed up] terrified and dreadful to my next class, macro by [Prof.] Glomm at 11:15 am. I could not sleep well. I HAD NIGHTMARES. My eyes were wide open from fear [and Prof.Kaganovich’s skepticism] when I left mathematics/ [Prof.] Kaganovich’s class and went to Prof. Glomm’s [class]. <3:57 pm. a student comes in.> The only way I was able to cope with it, was to stop going to the morning 9:30 am. class. My relationships improved and I was able to focus better in the next macro class. I was in control more now. Three stealings happened to me in Spring 2003. I could be suspected. [The] stealings [cases] happened/ [occurred/ensued] in the department. My neighbors jumped at/[over] my head/ceiling Fall 2003/ Spring 2004. They/ [neighbors] were jumping hard, had many noisy parties with many people and walked /[tramped] their heels into [their] floor/ my ceiling. They/[my] neighbors closed/[slammed] the door slammed loudly many many times. Shlomo Weber and finish The first stealing in Economics Department occurred to me in the Coffee Room. The piggy bank/mug was emptied Spring 2003. I had a key from the Coffee Room to share with other students. I did close the door carefully after finishing my studying in the adjacent study room. Sometimes, when the light was on and the door was open in [room] # 344 (Graduate Assistants room, [next to Prof. Kaganovich’s office]), I left the Cofee room opened. It/[the door] was always closed by other students from [room] 344. Maintenance guys/[staff] [came] come to Econ. Dept. 9pm. to 11pm. They close everything and clean the rooms. I felt vulnerable, [and] little guilty, and betrayed when the stealing of money in [the] Coffee Room occurred. [The] next day or in two days, week for sure, I saw Prof. Kaganovich opening the mug with money and looking there for change. I noticed him how [when] he sticked [stacked] his hand/fingers into the mug and he looked distressed or scared [or anxious] when I noticed. I was/felt dreadful from thinking that staff of Econ. Dept. will [would] suspect me or think it could be me stealing. I worried. Also, I worried because Shlomo Weber, a professor, was on campus with a visit/presentation. Could it be that Shlomo Weber advised his fiend [Michael] Kaganovich to forge stealing so that I, Ksenia Harbuziuk, start to worry and fail my exam or study worse. Shlomo Weber knew, probably knew, that I become distressed/worried when a stealing around me occurs. Shlomo Weber also reminded [to] me acutely about another stealing, also abroad and the first to occur to me. The previous time that I saw Prof. Weber, I was in Moscow, Russia, at a grant competition. Exactly one day before my presentation for a grant, a purse was stolen from my roommate Ira in the hotel. The Russian girl Ira, my roommate, was crying/having tears/ [weeping] and stating that [her purse disappeared/was stolen from the room. ] [She/Ira was upset], because her purse with credit card, personal things, and some cash disappeared. A lot of money was at stake, between $1,000 and $2,000. I came to Moscow from Ukraine with only $50 in my pocket, for comparison. I checked my thing. Nothing. I was sorry for the girl. When Ira/the girl came back saying that noone entered the room but me and her, I panicked. The girl/Ira told that she lost her purse in the room, she was quite sure about it. And the hotel administration, western-style and maybe [western-owned] hotel Renaissance, checked the electronic key/lock records that no service

    I even thought I could accidentally pick her purse or brush it w[ith] my hand into my drawer in the adjacent chestdrawer. This part was difficult on/for my head/mind.
    Eventually, I suggested Ira/her to check my bag [and] & I left /exchanged the room for another, w/[ith] a Ukrainian roommate. At least, I can expect my knew roommate, whom I saw before, not to put/hide her purse into my bag or drawer. I knew /read that such things happen occasionally/ rare.
    [The previous night, I told my previous/ first/ Russian roommate Ira that I am not their after Famine 1933 in Ukraine, when seven million people were starved to death. ]
    I was afraid I can be sent out of country for stealing, played /forged stealing, before my presentation about Ukraine and & the EU.
    I talked to other Ukrainian students, we we were six in total, to gain/collect some support. I could not get back to my proud and confident mood w/[ith] which I arrived to grant competition. I was [felt] nervous / panicky. I was able to calm down and & regain my confidence after calling home, [to] Ukrain[e], for support. I spent $36 of my $50 for two/one calls. I felt regretful about money.
    As I was working hard in Ukraine, I left to finish my presentation in Moscow during my 3-[three]-day long holiday. Fortunately, I prepared the presentation the first day after arrival and it was in my memory for rehearsal. The last day before presentation, I was dealing w/[ith] stealing instead of preparation/rehearsal.
    [The] next day, Prof. Shlomo Weber was trying to pair me with another project. I already had my team of maximum three. He also tried to increase my work load 4/ four times, i.e. add Russia to my project (x2) which I eventually agreed. He also tried to add World Trade Organization accession to my project w/[ith] another team member to which I told: No.
    This is all about my seeings[/ encounters] of Shlomo Weber.

    Spring 2003, speakers were stolen from Graduate Assistants room on the 3rd [third] floor. I used to listen to Ukrainian music there sometimes, late at night, mostly after 7:00 pm.
    Also, books began to disappear from the mail room adjacent to 105 on the first floor. I had one stolen book that I did not know was [previously] stolen.

    People in the [department] dept knew that spent less [than] that $5 a day on food & [and] did not have TV. It was easy/ easier to think than not to think that I was stealing. My best friend came asking to me related questions though not accusing me directly. I felt pain.
    Chris [Cunningham], [G]graduate [S]secretary, called me a communist, though I never was a communist.
    As for speakers from computer, someone hating Ukrainian music could [steal the speakers] do that. Could it be Prof. Kaganovich? If he hates Ukrainian music, he could.
    I do not know him or anything about him & [and] I do not have any mechanisms or rights or means for discovering or investigating. I even do not know how to use resources on campus appropriately, which things to tell [and] & not to tell, what pay attention to.

    Besides the Main Library, now Wells Library, I had experienced some harassment in my new post office 47408, Woodbridge. People giggle, stay too close, watch my parcels and addresses, somehow appear in large numbers when I arrive, cough, sniff, and sneeze in huge numbers and close to me, are eager to stick/show w/[ith] their fingers: May I help you?, when all I need from them is some personal space.
    I know some of these are natural, those people are disrespectful w/[ith] everybody. But I believe that some are harassing towards me. And I do not know why.
    I feel not accepted. I love this town.

    I could not listen to news with all this ‘problem’ word.
    P.S. I had three of my letters opened in my previous place. Was this FBI or a gang?

    Prof. Kaganovich also forced me to speak a foreign language that is not my native language. When I asked him a question in English, Prof. Kaganovich switched from English to another, foreign language.
    I did not intend to speak the language other than English in the Department, so I could not go to Prof. Kaganovich’s office hours.

    Thank you note for the following part of the complaint to Mr. William(son)
    for his presentation “Ten/10 ways to fight hate on campus”
    and to Annenberg CPB project for programming today and some previous programs on discrimination and civil rights.

    I had to suffer the pain of many little/small distractions/disruptions in class. Distracting small noises of my fellow students and inappropriate/improper gestures, mimics/ non-verbal communication as well as inappropriate abusive/harassing language of Prof. Michael Kaganovich forced me to stop going to Mathematics for Economists class.
    I did not enjoy the class as much as I looked forward to it at the beginning of semester. I claim that improper conduct of Prof. Michael Kaganovich was in violation of my civil rights.
    Apathy and indifference to my feelings have been the result of Prof. Michael Kaganovich’s teaching practice. The teacher tolerated hateful attitudes towards me on the part of the class. Giggling was a usual practice in class, giggling was accepted. First, I often could not understand what was funny. I felt excluded, because other students were laughing with the teacher and I did not. At the beginning of my first semester, I referred laughing and giggling to my lack of knowledge of American Culture. I felt removed, but I can learn the culture, I told to myself. I do not understand why people, students and the teacher, laugh because I am new to American culture, I do not understand jokes, and I do not know the American history or politics. I could not understand the jokes and giggles even if I knew all the words in the joke.
    Luckily, Prof. Kaganovich’s language was easy, so I heard no new words. Maybe, I heard one new word in a month from Prof. Michael Kaganovich. Also, the professor spoke English with a clear accent. Students explained to me that despite the fact that Michael Kaganovich was in the United States since 1960s or 1970s, his wife was from Russia and so they spoke Russian at home. I felt slightly disappointed, because I wanted to speak good English and here I see a professor, who spent thirty years in the United States and speaks easy English with accent.
    Apathy and indifference might lead to/cause a hate crime. These are the words of a guest speaker invited to Indiana University to give a presentation on February 7, 2006 (Tuesday). “After impact of apathy, hate will follow.”

    For apathy to take place, the victim has to be singled out and dehumanized. How was I dehumanized and removed from other students? Three categories were attached to me, maybe even more and I do not know of some of the labels. First, I was called “an international student.” International students are not Americans, we do not enjoy the protection of free speech, right to life, freedom, and happiness prescribed in the Constitution of the United States and its Amendments. I had to endure the environment of hate, because I had a job/assistantship and I was an international student. Some graduate students from United States and India did not have an assistantship or had only partial scholarship. I was looked at as someone who takes job from an American citizen, and numerous articles in the Indiana Daily Student were filled with hateful language, examples, and speech. For all these apathetic people did not matter how hard I worked to win the assistantship. My fellow students and professors did not want to hear about twelve-year Depression that I survived. I felt uncomfortable to tell that Depression in Ukraine was twice as deep/ low as 1930s Big Depression in the United States, and Ukrainian Depression was three times as long as the American. The people around/ my listeners were not supportive and expressed disbelief, indifference, or anxiety. Jonathan Manning was the only supportive person who listened without giggles. And Brian Swart listened occasionally and often giggled. I was grateful that he listened.
    Second, I was called “soviet” and thus a communist. For people in the economics department, facts did not matter that Ukraine was independent for eleven years by the time I arrived to study in Indiana University. For some reason, people in Bloomington did not know anything about Ukraine, but knew about the non-existent Soviet Union. When I told that I was from Ukraine and Ukraine is not part of Russia, I met skepticism on the part of students and professors, especially Prof. Michael Kaganovich. Both students and professors looked to be upset to hear that Ukrainian language was different from Russian. Graduate students Yu Yu and Manu Raghav as well as Prof. Micheal Kaganovich were/ seemed to be the most disappointed at my words and explanations about differences between Ukrainian and Russian language, as well as differences between Ukrainian and soviet culture. Graduate secretary Chris Cunningham called me a communist, though I never was a communist. I never even was in komsomo, which was required before becoming a communist. And I claim that it is inappropriate to call Ukrainian students communists, because I was only a fourteen year old child when politics changed and so did not contribute in any way to soviet politics. Yu Yu and Manu repeatedly called my language “Russian” and Prof. Michael Kaganovich switched from English to Russian when I was around or asking a question in English.
    Third, I was female/ a woman. Female student were not allowed in economics department the same gestures or language as male students. It was okay and appropriate for male students (Brian Swart on two occasions) to talk about sex or abusively/blatantly (James on one occasion) or making racial remarks (James on one occasion). But for me, it was not appropriate to talk even about biological processes in my body (on one occasion). I was singled out, sometimes with the second and only other female student Yu Yu in class, for giggles and laughing. Sometimes, Prof. Michael Kaganovich’s friend and office-neighbor professor Gerhard Glomm was killing two birds with one stone by his inappropriate jokes in class and beyond the classroom. I was twice unjustly denied a funding opportunity for presenting my work in an international conference in Turkey and for participating in a recognized international workshop/seminar in Europe by the department. I claim the funding was denied only due to singling me out by the department; I was treated less favorably for no other reason than being born a woman by Gerhard Glomm, also Department’s Graduate Director and my academic advisor; I was treated less favorably for no other reason than being from country of origin Ukraine by Michael Kaganovich.
    I was paired with undergraduate student Kim by Lynn DiPietro, who/student harassed me emotionally and sexually by masturbating a dog in front of me. And Prof. Kaganovich later tolerated gestures in class that touched that painful nerve. For example, students would drag one foot in front of me or fiddle with one foot while keeping other foot calm/not moving in my edge/side vision. Someone else/another student would make noise, click a pen, cling their tongue, cough or sigh or sneeze or sniff simultaneously/ at the same time. Noone in class seemed to be disturbed by this gesture and non-verbal communication but me. Maybe, Manu Raghav was also disturbed by some of these tricks too. He/Manu looked to be disturbed too, sometimes. For example, he changed his place often, sometimes twice during one class. But I did not ask Manu, I felt shy at that time to ask if someone else feels harassed by what harasses me. I felt inappropriate and I could not understand why Prof. Michael Kaganovich seems to know about the incident that I blamed on myself for only reason that I was older. When I requested full name of the student a few months ago from Lynn DiPietro who supervised and organized the program, I was refused the information/last name of the student who harassed me and I was referred to counseling services for no other reason, but repeatedly asking in calm voice to give me the full name of the person who harassed me.

    Next, I was implicitly placed into “potential/possible terrorist” category for my curiosity about languages, including Yiddish, Arab, and Hebrew languages. I was also sympathizing to students from Turkey, who have been sometimes openly hated by other students, including my friend Jonathan. Once, Jonathan said humiliating information/ a sentence about Ozlem, a student from Turkey, only because Ozlem asked him to be quiet and not disturb her studies. My friend Jonathan, the most humane of the class, told a sentence that referred in diminutive language to female sex/ womanness of Ozlem. This incident was 2002/2003 academic year. Also, end of Spring 2005 semester I saw a group of people, presumably college age guys/males, playing with knife in front of economics department after 7 pm. I only found and graduate student from Turkey Bulent Koksal in the department that night, who was a facilitator for Bloomington Muslim Group for Dialog at that time. I explain that I feel friendly feelings to students from Turkey, because Turkey is Ukraine’s neighbor, Ukraine has common projects with Turkey about cleaning the Black Sea, and we also strive for membership with the European Union where Turkey has an Associative membership.
