The League of Ukrainian Canadians’ Statement on
the 73rd Anniversary of the Holodomor

This year, on Saturday, November 25, we honour the memory of millions of Ukrainians who became victims of the Great Famine Genocide of 1932-33 in Ukraine, called the Holodomor, engineered and executed by the Soviet regime under Joseph Stalin. The President of Ukraine issued a Decree establishing that the fourth Saturday in November be a National Day of Remembrance for the victims of this mass atrocity. In commemorating the 73rd Anniversary of the Holodomor in Canada, we emphasize the importance of moral responsibility in restoring historical justice.

Therefore, we call on the Government of Canada, on the government of each province and territory of Canada and on each municipal government to

a) recognize the Holodomor as genocide and to condemn any attempt to deny or distort this historical truth as being anything less than a genocide;

b) to designate the fourth Saturday in November of every year throughout Canada as a day of remembrance of the more than seven million Ukrainian victims of the Holodomor ;

c) to include the true facts of the Holodomor in the records of Canada; and

d) to include communist crimes against humanity in Ukraine (1917-1991), in particular the Holodomor, as a compulsory topic in every elementary and secondary school student’s program in every province and territory of Canada.

If Canadians are to cherish their human rights and value the diversity of their society, Canada must condemn ALL crimes, including Soviet crimes against humanity.
