KIEV - August: Presidential candidate [frontrunner and centre-right
opposition Our Ukraine bloc leader] Viktor Yushchenko has said that a
conflict over Crimean Tatars' unauthorized seizure of land is being fuelled
artificially, as the authorities have never been serious in searching for a
compromise in solving the problem of [Crimean Tatar] repatriates and
current Crimean residents [Slavic population].

Yushchenko was commenting on repatriates' settlement problems during his
[campaign] visit to [the village of] Krasnohvardiyske (Crimea), Yushchenko's
personal web site said. "One should respect the rights of the people who
were forcibly repatriated from Crimea 60 years ago and who are now coming
back here, as this is their homeland and the homeland of their grandfathers
and great-grandfathers," Yushchenko said.

On the other side, representatives of many other ethnic groups, for whom
Crimea has become their homeland, currently live in the [Crimean] autonomy,
Yushchenko said. "The former and the latter are not guilty of anything and
they don't owe anything to one another," he added.

Yushchenko said that those people became hostages to circumstances and
that "no-one will go anywhere from here, as both the former and the latter
want to live and will live in Crimea".

Yushchenko said that "if land is not stolen or given at a bargain price to
`someone's men', there will be enough of it for everyone". Yushchenko
denied allegations that he defends exclusively the positions of Crimean
Tatars.
"I will be defending the interests of all Crimean residents, of all who live
here," he said.

Yushchenko is on a campaign tour in Crimea on Sunday [8 August], meeting
residents of Krasnohvardiyske, Dzhankoy, Azovske, Nyzhnyohirskyy and
other villages.
