OPEN LETTER FROM STUDENTS OF CENTRAL EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY (BUDAPEST, HUNGARY) TO THE PRESIDENT AND GOVERNMENT OF UKRAINE
Dear Mr. President and Ministers of the Ukrainian Government,
We are citizens of different countries who are deeply concerned with the current political crisis in
Ukraine. According to the latest Ukrainian and international media report, over 200 people were
arrested after mass protests that took place in Kyiv on March 9th, 2001. As media reports stated, many of the arrested were students who did not take part in the street protests. The reports further indicate that in making arrests the police used brutal methods, people were beaten and forced to sign false allegations against themselves, and had no access to legal counsel. We are concerned that as of March 12th over 60 people are still imprisoned.
We, the undersigned, demand from the president and the government of Ukraine to respect basic human rights. We demand to release immediately all students imprisoned on March, 9th. We demand that all reports of police brutality be investigated immediately and transparently. If, as it is reported, some students face dismissal from their universities for political reasons, we demand to re-instate such students and investigate unethical dismissals.
Sincerely,
