Piatykhatky is a small settlement, a district of the city of Kharkiv, separated from the city by a forest, closest to the border with the Russian Federation, in which unique physical research facilities are located, in particular, the nuclear subcritical facility “Neutron Source”.

8-10 November 2022 International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) assessed the extent of the damage to the “Neutron Source”, see the publication about the results.

Before the war, about 25,000 people lived in Piatykhatky. After shelling began, 2,500 people remained in the settlement. From mid-March to the end of April 2022, there was no electricity, water, heat, food, or medicine in the settlement. Ambulances did not go to Piatykhatky, because the road to the settlement was heavily shelled by Russian military.
