Piatykhatky is a northern district of Kharkiv, second biggest city of Ukraine, the site of a unique scientific nuclear reactor the “The Neutron Source” (KIPT), which had been shelled and bombed with precision guided weapons for 6 months starting February 24, 2022.
Marketa Vorel, a volunteer lawyer from the USA, reports from Kharkiv about nuclear danger. She visited the area where National Science Center ‘Kharkiv Institute of Physics and Technology’ is located, which is a site of a scientific nuclear reactor.
November 11, 2022 the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) published IAEA Director General Statement on Situation in Ukraine:
“Our three nuclear security and safeguards experts have been able to successfully complete this very important mission to Kharkiv, which has suffered greatly during the tragic war in Ukraine. We had previously received information from Ukraine about extensive damage to the city’s nuclear research facility, but this was the first time we could see the facility for ourselves and inform the world about the difficult situation there. Although radiation levels were normal, the extent of damage to this nuclear research facility is dramatic and shocking, even worse than expected. The sheer scale and intensity of the sustained targeting of KIPT violate all the seven indispensable nuclear safety and security pillars I outlined at the beginning of the conflict” Director General Grossi said.
The Kharkiv team of Maidan Monitoring Information Center has been contributing to the documenting of the first case of nuclear terror in the history of humankind since March 2022 during the ongoing assault of the nuclear facility and its neighbourhood. We were working there under shelling and bombing and we are extremely proud that the digital evidence we collected is included in the criminal case files.
