On the night of June 24, 2022, the Russian military fired two rockets at the sports complex of the Kharkiv Polytechnic building on Alchevsky Street. According to preliminary data, the complex was damaged by “Iskander” rockets.
The rockets hit the sports arena of the Polytechnic University directly. A fire broke out, which covered about 200 square meters. m. The fire burnt the floor, wall decorations and sports equipment. The athletic arena and the game hall were the most affected, and teachers’ offices were also damaged. Fortunately, there were no human deaths or injuries. Investigators qualified the shelling as a violation of the laws and customs of war.
The sports complex was built during 1985-1991, its total area was 8602 square meters. Before the full-scale invasion, students, athletes and future Olympians had training there. Competitions held in the “Polytechnic” sports complex, were attended by up to 500 spectators. It is also the only sports facility in Ukraine that received the State Award in the field of architecture. The sports complex also has the status of an Olympic training base for national teams of Ukraine.
