Hush Julia
On March 14, 2022, during the battle for Kharkiv, Russia launched missile strikes toward the city center. Then Maslovsky’s Rental House on Svobody Street was destroyed.

The damage has been done around 8:30. The central part of the four-story building was completely destroyed. The main part of the facade was lost, as well as most of the decorative elements. Two people who remained in the apartments at the time died under the rubble of the building. The profitable house was a monument of the Art Nouveau architecture style.
It was built in 1911 according to the project of the architect M. Meletinsky. The building has existed almost unchanged during more than 100 years with the original interiors well preserved. During the recent 10 years, the building housed the art pub Stariy Hem (= Old Hem, named after Ernest Hemingway) that deserved cult status among Kharkiv residents. It hosted various cultural events with the participation of poets and musicians. After a full-scale invasion, it was turned into an improvised bomb shelter. There were no people there at the time of the missile strike.
