In the village of Skovorodynivka, one of Kharkiv’s iconic sights is located – the National Literary and Memorial Museum of H.S. Skovoroda. Founded in 1972, it could boast a museum collection of several thousand exhibits, as well as numerous historical, architectural and artistic monuments of the 18th century.
The particular attraction was the museum building. This estate once belonged to the landlord Andrii Kovalivskyi, a friend of the Ukrainian philosopher Hryhoriy Skovoroda. In one of the rooms the prominent Ukrainian philosopher lived and worked. On May 6, 2022, around eleven o’clock in the evening, a Russian missile hit the museum. The strike was targeted – the projectile hit the roof of the building.
As the fire broke out, it spread over the entire premises. The director’s 35-year-old son was injured – rescuers pulled him out from under the rubble. The fire gutted the building, only the walls survived. Fortunately, the most valuable exhibits were not damaged – they were taken to a safe place in advance. But the house itself suffered irreparable losses. The fire was extinguished only at eight in the morning. According to the employees of the museum, there were neither military personnel nor their equipment nearby.
